5 Christmas Traditions You Can Start Right Away

I would quickly like to thank Kim Poteat from Happy Mommy Tired Mommy for guest posting on our site! She has come up with an awesome list of Christmas traditions that you should absolutely start this year! Please let her know what you think below and don’t forget to check her out – all of her social media links and a link to her blog will be listed at the bottom of this post! Thanks, Kim!

It’s that time of year again! Everyone is getting into the Christmas spirit and spending time with their loved ones. I hope everyone has finished their shopping and enjoying family time.

Family traditions are passed on from generation to generation. Those are the most thoughtful ones. Why not try a new one each year so your kids can pass it on to their family and so on and so forth? I love adding new and old traditions and making it my own, to make it unique.

Here are some fun traditions you might want to add to the list this year:

1. Christmas Karaoke

If you and your family love caroling then this one should be really entertaining. Break out the karaoke machine or YouTube has karaoke channels with tons of songs you can stream on your tv. There is nothing like Christmas music to get you and the whole family into the holiday spirit.

2. Create Salt Dough Ornaments

These are super easy to make and a really fun craft for the kiddos. You can use cookie cutter Christmas shapes and decorate with paint however you’d like. Here is the recipe

4 cups of all purpose flour

1 cup of salt

1.5 cups of water

Bake at 200 Degrees for 1-2 hours. Let it sit and cool before decorating.

The kids will have fun helping with mixing and kneading the dough. Let the kids pick their shape and decorate their ornaments how they want to.

[Laura: I had to add, I did this this year with my son and it was sooo fun! Plus, now we have captured Noah’s little hand and foot print forever! I definitely recommend this for parents and kiddos of all ages!]

3. 12 Days of Christmas Movies

If you can fit 25 days of Christmas movies in more power to you! Sometimes we get busy and we can’t fit all the movies we want. Here are a few family friendly movies everyone will love.

1. Santa Clause

2. Santa Clause 2

3. Santa Clause 3

4. Charlie Brown Christmas

5. Home Alone

6. The Polar Express

7. The Muppet Christmas Carol

8. How The Grinch Stole Christmas

9. Rise of the Guardians

10. Jingle All the Way

11. Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmas

12. Elf

4. Pay It Forward With Kindness

Christmas is the perfect time to give back. Why not start a tradition with the kids and do an act of kindness each year? I once went to go rent a movie during December at Redbox and there was a bag attached to it with a note. In the bag that was sealed it said “Please enjoy these snacks during your movie!” There was a bag of popcorn and hot cocoa in a bag that was stapled shut, the note had Christmas facts and a story about Santa. I thought that was a really sweet Idea. The next day I felt so inspired to pay it forward, I bought lunch for the car behind me in the drive-thru. Spread some Christmas Cheer!

5. Create Christmas Game

How great is it to be able to sit around the table and do a family activity that you help create? Here are a few examples to get you started:

Christmas Charades

Here are a few themes that can get you started with charades with the family:

     Guess the Christmas song

     Guess the Christmas movie

Christmas Go Fish

Make your own cards with different Christmas objects like candy canes.

Christmas Board Game

Board game with pieces you created. The pieces could be an ornament, candy cane, or a gingerbread man. You can Create your own rules as long as everyone agrees. Or have everyone around the table pick one rule of their own.

I hope you enjoyed some of these traditions. I think I am going to try one or two of these this year!
